10 Tips to Improve Your Eyesight Naturally

There is no denying that having healthy eyesight is important. Our sense of sight allows us to move through the world without bumping into things. It helps to alert us to danger, and lets us see the faces of the people we love. Healthy vision is necessary for the work that we do in our daily lives.

For that reason, having less-than-perfect vision, or vision that is impaired due to age or other factors, can be extremely frustrating.

Things That Can Damage Your Eyesight

 Loss of vision is not caused by a single factor. There are many different things that can contribute to diminishing eyesight. Let’s take a look at some of the most common causes:

  • Age can cause your sense of vision to weaken. Sometimes existing vision problems, such as near-sightedness or far-sightedness, can worsen with age. Other things may cause sudden loss of eyesight.
  • Macular degeneration is a common contributor to age-related vision loss. There are two kinds: dry, which results in subtle, slow loss of vision over a period of time; and wet, which results in sudden vision loss.
  • Diabetes is an epidemic in the United States, and it can often lead to loss of eyesight. Vision may be blurry with blind spots, and it may be particularly difficult to see at night.
  • Cataracts are another common cause of partial vision loss. With cataracts, vision may be either cloudy or fuzzy, and exposure to bright lights may cause a glare that makes it difficult to see.
  • Glaucoma is an eye condition that causes damage to the optic nerve. People with glaucoma may experience tunnel vision, or missing areas of vision.
  • Other, rarer causes of vision loss may include: accident or injury, stroke, optic neuritis, neuritis pigmentosa, tumors such as optic glioma and retinoblastoma, and blocked blood vessels.

Some of the rare causes of vision loss, such as tumors, may require surgery or other medical intervention.


Ways to Improve Your Eyesight Naturally

Fortunately for all of us, there are things we can do to help improve our eyesight naturally. Keep reading for the top 10 things you can do to help make your vision better.

Eat blueberries. Blueberries have recently been touted as a superfood, and with good reason. They pack a huge nutritional punch, including vitamins A, B6, and C, as well as potassium and iron. The antioxidant properties of these vitamins may help to prevent cataracts and glaucoma, as well as improving night vision. In fact, eating blueberries is recommended for fighter pilots who have to be able to see at night.

Do some eye exercises. Many of us spend our days looking at computer screens, which can put a strain on our sense of vision but not really force it to work. Here are some examples of exercises that can help strengthen your eyesight:

  1. Practice focusing. Bring a pencil close to your face and focus on it. Gradually pull it away, forcing your eyes to continue to focus until it is so far ways that focusing is no longer possible.
  2. Blink your eyes very rapidly 20-30 times in succession. Do not squeeze them shut, just flutter them.
  3. Roll your eyes clockwise 4-5 times, and then counter-clockwise. Repeat several times.
  4. Rub your palms together to generate heat and then place your heated palms over your closed eyes. Hold until the heat fades.

Take gingkgo biloba. While many people think of this herb as a remedy for memory loss, it also stimulates circulation to the eyes. It is widely available as a nutritional supplement.

Stimulate your eye muscles by rinsing with cold water. When you get up in the morning, rinse your face with cool water. Then fill your mouth with water, and – with the water still in your mouth – close your eyes and splash your eyelids with cold water. The pressure of the water inside your mouth combined with the water striking your eyelids helps to stimulate your eyes.

Eat foods rich in Vitamin A. Vitamin A is a powerful antioxidant and one of the most important micronutrients for healthy eyesight. Some foods that are rich in Vitamin A include: sweet potatoes, carrots, mangos, oranges, figs, and green leafy vegetables.

Massage your eyes. Pinch your eyebrow so that your index finger is above your eyebrow and your thumb is just below it. Move your fingers all along the length of your eyebrow, massaging as you go. Then run your thumb gently around your eye socket. Repeat this whenever your eyes feel fatigued.

Make sure to get enough sleep. Sleep is restorative and allows your body to undo the damage done during the day. If you have difficulty sleeping, consider meditating for a few minutes before bed, or taking a hot bath. Even if you can’t sleep, make sure to close your eyes and let them rest. Staying up looking at a computer screen or reading can put a serious strain on your eyes.

It is also important to give your eyes a break when you are staring at a television or computer screen – try to take a brief break every thirty minutes or so. Make sure to protect your eyes when you are out in the sun by wearing sunglasses that protect you from both UVA and UVB rays. Doing just a few simple things to protect and strengthen your eyes can make a huge difference in your eyesight.
